Individual and Couples Counselling
The aim of counselling is to help you find balance and to be able to regain it when it is lost. As an experienced counsellor I can provide a confidential service within a safe space to listen and to help you explore your feelings.
I can work with a wide range of difficulties including issues related to:
During our first meeting we can look at your main concerns and we can then consider how to proceed from there. We can discuss whether you would like an agreed number of sessions or whether a more open-ended counselling arrangement would suit you better. We can explore your current and underlying difficulties, enabling you to have a clearer understanding of them. You can then consider choices available to you in order to move forward in your life.
I mainly work as a psychodynamic counsellor. This form of therapy entails identifying recurring life patterns in order to gain insight into changing them. I work in a holistic way in order to promote healing and balance.
In addition to my private practice with young people, adults and couples some of my recent counselling work has been within the educational sector at a University. I work with young people from age 15 upwards. I also undertake adoption work in relation to new adoptive placements and attachment issues.
Prior to my career as a counsellor I worked for thirty years as a social worker with adults, young people, children and families within a variety of settings. Through this work I have developed specialist knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth, HIV and AIDS and chronic and terminal illness as well as in-depth knowledge about the impact of attachment issues on relationships.
I have worked for the Gloucestershire Counselling Service (GCS) for several years in Cheltenham, Stroud and Gloucester. Following my initial training at GCS I undertook a post-graduate associate year in psychodynamic counselling in addition to further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre. I have subsequently completed a training in Couples Counselling and in Time-Limited Psychodynamic Therapy at the Gloucestershire Counselling Service in addition to undertaking a course in Mindfulness.
I offer counselling in Cheltenham and Stroud. My therapy practice in Cheltenham can be easily accessed from Cirencester and Gloucester. It is approximately 18 miles from Cirencester and 10 miles from Gloucester. My Stroud practice is approximately a fifteen-minute walk from the centre of Stroud and approximately 12 miles from Cirencester.
The nearest train stations from my practice in Cheltenham are Cheltenham Spa (0.6 miles) and Gloucester (6.8 miles). Stroud station is a twenty-minute walk from my Stroud practice.
I am a fully accredited counsellor with the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP), a body which awards the most widely recognized quality standard for the mature and experienced practitioner. I operate within the BACP ethical framework and regularly participate in further professional development training.
I am a registered practitioner with WPA Health Insurance, PruHealth and Aviva.
